The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a series of heavy disciplinary sanctions against Senegal following verdicts arising from incidents involving the national team, its officials, and supporters.
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw received a five-match suspension from official CAF competitions and was further fined USD 100,000 for his conduct during the tournament.
Two Senegalese players, Cheikh Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, were each suspended for two official CAF matches after being found guilty of unsporting behaviour toward match officials.
CAF also imposed substantial financial penalties on the Senegal Football Federation (FSF). The federation was fined USD 300,000 for the improper conduct of its supporters and an additional USD 300,000 for the unsporting behaviour of players and members of the technical staff.
A further USD 15,000 fine was slapped on the federation for team misconduct after five Senegal players received cautions during the competition.
Despite the sanctions, Senegal remains one of the tournament’s biggest beneficiaries financially, having received USD 10 million in prize money for winning the Africa Cup of Nations.
The rulings serve as a strong signal from CAF on discipline and accountability, particularly regarding behaviour toward match officials and crowd control, as African football continues to push for higher standards of conduct both on and off the pitch.
