The Speaker of Parliament and National Resistance Movement (NRM) Second Vice Chairperson (Female), Anita Among, has said government will release all individuals arrested during the election period who are found to be innocent, in a move aimed at easing post-election tensions.
Speaking while meeting newly elected independent Members of Parliament who have declared support for the ruling National Resistance Movement, Among emphasized the need for restraint and reconciliation in the aftermath of the polls.
“We must be careful not to criminalize politics. Where investigations prove that individuals were wrongly arrested, they should be released,” she said.
Among urged political actors and security agencies to distinguish between legitimate political activity and criminal conduct, warning that conflating the two could deepen divisions. She called for dialogue across the political divide, stressing that engagement—not repression—should guide the country forward.
Her remarks come amid concerns from sections of the opposition and civil society over arrests made during the heated campaign and election period. By signaling openness to reviewing such cases, Among positioned Parliament and the ruling party as willing to address grievances and promote calm.
She encouraged the newly elected legislators to prioritize national unity and constructive debate, saying Parliament should serve as a platform for consensus-building rather than confrontation.
