The State Minister for Works and Transport, Musa Ecweru, has directed car bond operators along Jinja Road to remove vehicles parked within the road reserve in a bid to ease persistent traffic congestion.
The directive targets operators in the areas of Nakawa, Banda, Kireka and Bweyogerere — sections of Jinja Road that have in recent years experienced mounting pressure from increased commercial activity and urban expansion.
According to the Minister, vehicles displayed for sale within the road reserve have significantly narrowed the carriageway and obstructed pedestrian walkways, contributing to frequent traffic snarl-ups, especially during peak hours. He ordered that all such vehicles be removed within this week.
Ecweru further called upon the Police to ensure strict enforcement of the directive, warning that failure to comply would attract action in accordance with traffic and urban planning regulations.
Jinja Road is one of the busiest entry and exit routes to Kampala, linking the capital to eastern Uganda. Authorities say the encroachment on road reserves not only disrupts traffic flow but also poses safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.
The enforcement move forms part of broader government efforts to restore order along major highways and improve traffic management within the greater Kampala metropolitan area.
Officials say they will continue monitoring compliance as part of ongoing measures to reclaim road reserves and enhance mobility along critical transport corridors.
