As Uganda joins the rest of the world to celebrate Mary Day, couples have been urged to reconcile and take a more active role in mentoring their children, especially amid increasing cases of divorce and separation.
Leaders from the Mothers’ Union, a Christian charity under the Church of Uganda, warn that many families are experiencing silent breakdowns. In some cases, parents live in the same home but are no longer united, while others have completely separated—leaving children vulnerable due to lack of guidance.
According to Nalongo Biingi Roseline Kawiso, the organisation is taking steps to address the growing crisis by encouraging couples to bury their differences and rebuild stable families.
She made the remarks during Mary Day celebrations at St Peter’s Church Kisaasi, where she emphasized the importance of proper parenting, particularly for children approaching adolescence who require strong moral and emotional support.
The call comes as the Mothers’ Union marks 150 years of existence, highlighting its long-standing role in strengthening marriage and promoting Christian family values.
Nalongo Biingi noted that the organisation plans to expand its outreach across the country to promote reconciliation, responsible parenting, and the preservation of family life, warning that failure to act could lead to deeper social challenges affecting the next generation.
