The Patriotic League of Uganda has officially withdrawn its earlier endorsement of Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker, marking a significant shift ahead of the leadership contest in the incoming 12th Parliament.
The announcement was made on Wednesday through the organisation’s Secretary General, David Kabanda, who confirmed that the group will soon present new candidates for the two top parliamentary positions.
Kabanda did not provide detailed reasons for the withdrawal but stated that the League was realigning its political position and would communicate fresh endorsements after internal consultations.
The development has immediately triggered political debate within parliamentary and party circles, as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions are among the most influential offices in Uganda’s legislature, responsible for presiding over debates, guiding lawmaking processes, and ensuring parliamentary order.
The withdrawal also comes at a sensitive time, just days before Members of Parliament-elect are scheduled to be sworn in for the 12th Parliament, with internal lobbying and negotiations for leadership positions already underway.
Neither Among nor Tayebwa had publicly responded to the announcement by the time of reporting.
The move is expected to reshape early calculations in the race for parliamentary leadership, with political observers closely watching whether the PLU’s revised position will influence broader alignments within the legislature.
Further details on the new candidates expected to be fronted by the group are yet to be officially released.
