Leaders in Kitgum Municipality have called for stronger cooperation between political and technical leaders as the municipality intensifies efforts to attain city status by 2031.
The appeal was made during the first full council sitting held after the swearing-in of newly elected leaders and the election of the Deputy Speaker.
Emma Oryema Tolit urged councilors to prioritize unity and collective responsibility, saying teamwork would be essential in driving development and improving public services within the municipality.
He commended councilors for what he described as the maturity displayed during the election and swearing-in process and encouraged them to actively participate in the standing committees expected to be constituted by council leadership.
Oryema said cooperation between leaders would help accelerate infrastructure development and strengthen the municipality’s readiness for city status.
Meanwhile, Richard Okwera Ojara also emphasized the importance of collaboration among councilors, division chairpersons, and the municipal technical team in improving service delivery.
Ojara pledged equitable development across the divisions of Pandwong, Central, and Pager, saying the municipality plans to implement several infrastructure and social service projects over the next five years.
He noted that achieving city status would require improved urban planning, better roads, enhanced sanitation, and stronger social services to meet the standards required for elevation.
Kitgum is among several municipalities across Uganda seeking city status as local governments position themselves for increased urbanization, investment, and improved administrative capacity.
