Uganda has taken a significant step towards regional integration by signing the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons within the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) region.
Led by Foreign Minister Gen. Hajji Abubaker Jeje Odongo, the signing ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in Kampala. This move underscores Uganda’s firm commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and fostering trade and development.
During the ceremony, Minister Odongo emphasized Uganda’s dedication to promoting regional trade and integration. He stressed the importance of prioritizing regional cooperation and economic growth, stating that it is essential for IGAD member states to work together towards common goals.
The protocol aims to facilitate higher volumes of regional trade and ease labor mobility among member states. By removing barriers to the movement of people, goods, and services, it seeks to create a more conducive environment for economic exchange and collaboration within the IGAD region.
Uganda’s decision to sign the protocol reflects its proactive stance towards regional integration and its recognition of the potential benefits that increased cooperation can bring. This development marks a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen ties between IGAD member states and promote shared prosperity and development in the region.
As implementation of the protocol progresses, it is expected to contribute to the growth of regional economies, foster greater social and cultural exchange, and enhance the overall resilience and stability of the IGAD region.
