The political landscape of Uganda’s Justice Forum (JEEMA) took an unexpected turn as Asuman Basalirwa, the party’s President, made a dramatic reversal of his decision to step down.

Just days after declaring his intention to retire from the presidency, Basalirwa shocked party members and the public alike with a sudden change of heart.

The announcement, made during a media interview held last week, sent ripples of confusion throughout the party ranks. Many speculated about the reasons behind Basalirwa’s decision and the implications it would have for JEEMA’s future. However, just when the dust began to settle, another bombshell hit the political scene.

On Sunday, May 19, 2024, Basalirwa issued a letter to the party membership and the general public, revealing his decision to remain as JEEMA’s President and instead focus on restructuring the party’s cabinet. Citing authority vested in him by the constitution of the Justice Forum, Basalirwa announced sweeping changes to the party’s leadership structure.

“I hereby inform the Party Membership and the General Public that by the authority entrusted to me in Article 45 (1) (1 V) of the constitution of the Justice Forum, I hereby make changes in the cabinet,” Basalirwa declared in the letter.

The sudden reversal and subsequent cabinet reshuffle left many within JEEMA and the wider political community reeling. Speculation was rife about the motivations behind Basalirwa’s change of heart, with some attributing it to internal party dynamics and others suggesting external pressures.

Regardless of the reasons, Basalirwa’s decision signaled a new chapter for JEEMA, one marked by uncertainty but also potential. As the party grappled with the aftermath of these seismic shifts, all eyes turned to the newly reshaped cabinet and the direction in which Basalirwa would lead JEEMA in the coming days.
