The Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi,  confirmed that NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, sustained a minor injury during a police intervention in Bulindo, Wakiso District which occurred during an impromptu procession following a Thanksgiving ceremony, has sparked conflicting accounts between Kyagulanyi’s team and the police.

The incident has brought renewed scrutiny to the ongoing tension between the opposition and law enforcement organs. While the police assert that Kyagulanyi’s injury was the result of an accidental stumble, his team contends that he was struck by a tear gas canister.

This discrepancy highlights the broader issue of how confrontations between political figures and security forces are handled, raising questions about the protection of political rights and the conduct of law enforcement in highly charged situations.

According to Ssenyonyi, doctors  determined that the fragments from the canister did not affect Kyagulanyi’s bone, though he will require surgery to remove them. Currently receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital, Kyagulanyi’s condition remains stable.

The police, spokes person ACP Kituuma Rusoke, maintain that Kyagulanyi ignored warnings against holding a procession, which led to the police intervention. Rusoke stated that an investigation will be conducted to establish the facts surrounding the incident, but the conflicting accounts have already fueled further political tensions.

As Ugandans await the outcome of the investigation, the incident underscores the fragile relationship between the state and opposition leaders, particularly in the lead-up to future political engagements.
