Ugandan police have launched an investigation into a surge of robberies targeting upcountry bus passengers who are sedated and robbed of valuables. Authorities urge travelers to exercise caution as the festive season approaches, a period of heightened travel and potential vulnerability.
With the festive season nearing, Uganda’s upcountry buses have become the center of a disturbing crime trend where unsuspecting passengers are sedated and robbed. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that three recent cases involved passengers who were drugged and stripped of their belongings mid-journey. Among the victims is Amon Basikana, 24, who fell prey to the scheme on a Jaguar bus on November 5 and remains hospitalized following the ordeal.
A day later, another incident unfolded on a Jaguar bus en route to Kigali. In this case, three passengers on bus registration number UBN 260T were drugged and robbed of cash, phones, and other valuables before being rushed to Kabale Referral Hospital for treatment.
Police warn that this pattern of crime appears to be increasing and urge passengers to exercise vigilance, especially when consuming food and drinks offered by fellow travelers. “We urge the public to remain cautious, especially when eating meals during journeys since most perpetrators often deceive victims into consuming food and drinks laced with sedatives before robbing them,” Rusoke said.
In response, law enforcement is working with bus companies to address these security concerns. The need for protective measures is critical as the holiday season approaches, when upcountry travel spikes, increasing the potential risk for such crimes. Police recommend that travelers avoid accepting food and drinks from strangers and remain alert to unusual interactions.
