Margaret Baba Diri, the former Woman Member of Parliament for Koboko, has passed away.
Her death was announced in Parliament on Thursday by James Boliba Baba, the MP for Koboko County. Baba Diri reportedly died while being transported to the hospital.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among confirmed the news during the session, leading the House in a moment of silence to honor the late legislator. “Hon. Baba Diri did not have eyes, but she would see. She had a unique way of perceiving the world around her. She will be remembered for her dedication and service,” Among remarked.
Born on June 29, 1954, Baba Diri first joined Parliament in 1996 as a representative for People with Disabilities (PWDs). She later served as the Woman MP for Koboko, a position she held until 2021 when she lost her seat to Dr. Sharifa Aate, the granddaughter of former President Idi Amin.
Before entering politics, Baba Diri was a teacher at St. Charles Lwanga in Koboko from 1976 to 1990 and a gender development officer at the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) between 1992 and 1996.
During her time in Parliament, she served on the Committee on Commissions, State Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) and the Committee on Education and Sports. Baba Diri was widely respected for her advocacy for disability rights and gender equality.
The exact cause of her death remains unclear. Parliament is expected to join efforts to organize her send-off in Koboko.
