The Electoral Commission has confirmed a by-election in Kawempe Division North to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant following the death of Hon. Ssegirinya Muhammad on January 9, 2025.

The election will also cover the Directly Elected Councillor position for Kazo-Angola Ward, a move to ensure full representation for the area.

The Commission received formal notification of the vacancy from the Clerk to Parliament on January 15, 2025. In response, the Commission has approved an election program, which will be shared with stakeholders during a meeting scheduled for January 27, 2025.

In a related effort, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, highlighted the ongoing General Update of the National Voters Register, which began on January 20, 2025. This exercise aims to register eligible Ugandan citizens aged 18 and above, update voter details, and allow voters to transfer their polling locations.

Justice Byabakama called on political parties, civil society, and community leaders to mobilize citizens for the voter registration exercise. “A credible and updated voters register is critical for free and fair elections. We urge all eligible voters to participate actively,” he said during a January 24 briefing.

All citzens are encouraged to visit update centers in their respective parishes to register or confirm their voting details before the process closes. The upcoming by-elections will not only determine parliamentary representation.
