Pope Francis has been admitted to Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic for bronchitis treatment and diagnostic tests, the Vatican announced on Friday.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who has faced a series of health challenges in recent years, has canceled all meetings for the next three days.

Despite struggling with bronchitis in recent weeks, Francis held several audiences at the Vatican on Friday morning, including meetings with Slovakia’s prime minister and CNN’s Chief Executive, Mark Thompson. According to CNN’s Vatican correspondent Christopher Lamb, the pope appeared mentally sharp but had difficulty speaking for long periods due to breathing issues.

Francis has a history of lung-related health concerns, dating back to his youth when he suffered from severe pneumonia and had part of one lung removed. His latest hospitalization is expected to heighten concerns within the Catholic Church about his overall well-being.

In addition to respiratory issues, Francis has been dealing with other medical conditions, including diverticulitis, which led to colon surgery in 2021. He also underwent abdominal surgery in 2023 and has been using a walking stick or wheelchair due to mobility challenges.

Despite these ailments, the pope has maintained a demanding schedule, including a 12-day tour of four countries in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific—the longest and furthest trip he has taken since becoming pope in 2013.

Last month, Francis suffered a fall that injured his arm, but he continued to fulfill his duties. The Vatican has yet to confirm whether his upcoming engagements, including an April meeting with King Charles III, will be affected by his latest health setback.

The Roman Catholic Church is closely monitoring the pope’s condition, as his health remains a significant concern for Vatican officials and the global Catholic community.
