The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially commenced the nomination exercise for the Kawempe Division North Parliamentary by-election and the Kazo-Angola Councillor seat.

The two-day process, running from Wednesday, February 26 to Thursday, February 27, 2025, is taking place at the EC offices in Kawempe, near Akamwesi Mall along Gayaza Road. By the close of the first day, four candidates had successfully secured their nominations to contest for the Kawempe Division North MP seat.

Among them are representatives from major political parties and independent candidates, each selecting a unique campaign symbol to represent their vision. Hanifa Karadi Murerwa (Independent )was the first candidate to be nominated, choosing the Clock as her symbol, signifying readiness and punctuality in serving the people of Kawempe North.

Luwemba Lusswa Muhammed (Independent ) followed as the second aspirant, selecting the Radio as his campaign symbol to emphasize the role of communication and grassroots engagement in governance.

Luyimbazi Elias Nalukoola (NUP) also secured his nomination, representing Uganda’s leading opposition party, National Unity Platform, and is expected to gain strong support from party loyalists in the area.

Mukiibi Sadat (FDC) was the last candidate nominated on the first day, running under the Forum for Democratic Change, one of Uganda’s longest-standing opposition parties, with a focus on experienced leadership.

The nomination process will continue on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Office of the Assistant District Election Administrator in Kawempe Division, marking the final opportunity for aspirants to submit their papers and secure a place on the ballot.

With a mix of political heavyweights and independent contenders, the Kawempe North by-election is shaping up to be highly competitive, and the EC is expected to release the official list of all nominated candidates once the process concludes
