Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the White House took an unexpected turn when tensions flared between him, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance.

The dramatic encounter ended with Zelensky being asked to leave, sending shockwaves through diplomatic circles and raising concerns about the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations.

The meeting, initially expected to strengthen ties and secure continued American support for Ukraine, quickly spiraled into a heated exchange. Sources familiar with the situation say the disagreement began over Ukraine’s military funding and U.S. policy on the ongoing war with Russia. At one point, voices were raised, and the atmosphere turned confrontational.

A planned public appearance by Zelensky at a Washington think tank was abruptly canceled, leaving attendees—including those already seated for a pre-arranged buffet—scrambling for explanations. The Ukrainian delegation has since gone silent, reportedly in crisis mode as they assess the fallout from the day’s events.

“This trip was supposed to reinforce Ukraine’s relationship with its most important ally, but now, Kyiv finds itself in uncharted territory,” said a senior Ukrainian official. The shift in tone is a stark contrast to previous visits, where Zelensky had been warmly received by U.S. leaders.

Zelensky later appeared on Fox News, where he acknowledged the crucial role American support has played in Ukraine’s survival but refrained from commenting directly on the White House confrontation. The fallout from the meeting now looms over Ukraine’s next diplomatic engagements, with Zelensky set to travel to London on Saturday to meet UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

With U.S. backing for Ukraine’s war effort hanging in the balance, Kyiv is now faced with the challenge of salvaging its strained relations with Washington.
