The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has officially launched the second edition of the National Environment Sustainability Awards, an initiative aimed at recognizing and celebrating individuals, organizations, and communities that have made outstanding contributions to environmental conservation in Uganda.

Speaking at the launch, NEMA Executive Director Dr. Barirega Akankwasah emphasized that the awards seek to endorse and promote best environmental practices that enhance resource productivity while reducing pollution.

“The second edition of the National Environment Sustainability Awards is aimed at endorsing and recognizing existing best environmental practices for improved resource productivity and reduced environmental pollution,” Dr. Akankwasah stated.

The awards will spotlight innovations and efforts in areas such as waste management, biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, and climate change mitigation. NEMA hopes that by recognizing these efforts, more Ugandans will be inspired to take an active role in protecting the environment.

According to NEMA, nominees will be selected based on their tangible impact in promoting sustainability and ensuring ecological balance. Both individuals and institutions that have implemented practical solutions to environmental challenges will be eligible for recognition.

The inaugural edition of the awards saw various environmental champions honored for their efforts in afforestation, eco-friendly business models, and renewable energy solutions. This year’s edition is expected to attract even greater participation from different sectors.

Uganda faces increasing environmental challenges, including deforestation, wetland encroachment, and plastic pollution. Initiatives like these, NEMA believes, play a crucial role in encouraging responsible environmental stewardship.

The awards ceremony is set to take place later this year, with NEMA calling upon stakeholders, environmental activists, and the general public to participate in nominating deserving candidates.
