Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho is facing a race against time to be fit for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Guinea on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

During a pre-match interview on Monday at the stadium, Aucho revealed that he is still awaiting a final medical assessment to determine his availability for the game.

“I am waiting for the doctors’ confirmation if I will be able to play tomorrow or not. But still, the boys are available to represent the team perfectly, and they know exactly what to do on the pitch to get a win against Guinea,” Aucho said.

Aucho’s potential absence could be a major blow to the Cranes, given his leadership and experience in the midfield. However, Uganda’s head coach Joseph Paul Put remains optimistic, highlighting the team’s intense preparation and readiness to face Guinea.

“We have had productive training sessions, and the players are showing great determination. I believe we are ready to deliver a strong performance regardless of Aucho’s situation,” Put said.

The Cranes are under pressure to secure three points, as the match is crucial for their hopes of advancing in the World Cup qualification campaign.

Aucho also called on Ugandan football fans to turn up in large numbers, emphasizing the importance of home support in boosting the team’s morale.

As fans eagerly await the final medical decision, the Cranes will be hoping to maintain their focus and deliver a positive result against a competitive Guinea side.

Group G is currently led by Algeria with 12 points, followed by Mozambique with 12 points, Guinea with 7 points, Botswana with 6 points, Uganda also with 6 points, and Somalia in sixth place with 1 point. The group winner will automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the second-placed team will have an opportunity to compete in a playoff for a chance at qualification.
