The ashes of esteemed journalist Shaka Ssali, affectionately known as the “Kabale Kid,” have been returned to Uganda following his cremation in the United States. In accordance with his wishes, the family opted for a modest send-off, eschewing state involvement and public ceremonies.

Ssali, who passed away in March 2025, had explicitly requested that his funeral not be state-sponsored, citing concerns over Uganda’s underfunded health sector. He believed that government resources should prioritize essential services over ceremonial expenditures.

Born in Kabale District, Ssali’s journey from a school dropout and child soldier to a renowned journalist in the United States is a testament to his resilience and dedication. He earned advanced degrees in Cross-Cultural Communications from UCLA and became the host of Voice of America’s “Straight Talk Africa,” providing a platform for diverse African voices.

In September 2024, the Ugandan North American Association honored Ssali with a Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his contributions to journalism and his commitment to integrity and truth.

Shaka Ssali’s final act reflects the values he championed throughout his life: humility, service, and a steadfast commitment to the greater good.
