Kampala Capital City Authority is considering the introduction of electric buses as part of a new transport strategy aimed at easing traffic congestion in Kampala.
The plan comes as the city authority moves to gradually phase out what officials describe as the chaotic boda boda transport system that has long dominated movement within the capital.
According to reports, Sharifah Buzeki revealed that the authority is currently holding discussions with local bus operators to introduce electric buses along major transport corridors in the city.
The proposed initiative is part of a broader shift toward mass public transport as Kampala grapples with rapid urbanisation, increasing vehicle ownership, and pressure on the city’s road infrastructure.
City authorities believe that deploying electric buses could help reduce traffic congestion while also promoting cleaner and more environmentally friendly transport options. The move would also support Kampala’s transition toward modern urban mobility systems with lower carbon emissions.
If implemented, the electric bus project is expected to operate along key routes linking major business areas and residential suburbs, potentially offering commuters a more organized and efficient alternative to the current transport system dominated by motorcycles and minibuses.
