Senior Presidential Advisor on Defence and Security, Proscovia Nalweyiso, has dismissed claims that opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu is being pursued by security agencies, insisting he is free to leave and return to the country.

Nalweyiso said Kyagulanyi, who leads the National Unity Platform, has never been declared a wanted person by the state. She noted that she has not attended any security meeting where he was discussed as a target of arrest.

“I have never attended any meeting where Kyagulanyi was being discussed as a wanted person. He is free to leave the country and return,” she said during an interview on Sanyuka Television.

Her remarks come after Kyagulanyi recently announced that he had temporarily left Uganda, claiming he had gone into hiding due to pressure from security forces following the elections.

Nalweyiso’s statement reflects the government’s position that there has been no official effort to restrict the opposition leader’s movements, countering narratives from his supporters who believe he faced state intimidation.

The differing accounts highlight the ongoing tension between the government and opposition, particularly over issues of political freedom, security, and the space for dissent in the country.
