Persis Namuganza has officially withdrawn from the race for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament and pledged full support to the candidates endorsed by the ruling National Resistance Movement.
In a statement, Namuganza said she would now rally behind Jacob Oboth-Oboth for Speaker and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker following their endorsement by the NRM.
“I have officially withdrawn from the Speakership race. Moving forward, I will fully rally behind the candidates the NRM has selected today for both Speaker and Deputy Speaker,” she said.
Namuganza also thanked Ugandans for what she described as overwhelming support and encouragement throughout her campaign period.
“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all Ugandans for the overwhelming support and love you have shown me during this campaign period,” she added.
She congratulated Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa upon securing the ruling party’s endorsement ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 25.
Her withdrawal further consolidates support within the NRM ranks as the party seeks to maintain unity ahead of the election of the top leadership of the 12th Parliament.
