Dr. Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS and wife of Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, has expressed confidence in her safety in Kenya while condemning her husband’s abduction and detention by Ugandan authorities.
Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Wednesday, Byanyima revealed the toll her husband’s plight has taken on her life. “Currently, I have to balance between caring for my husband and doing my job. However, I feel very safe here in Kenya,” she said.
Dr. Besigye, a staunch critic of President Yoweri Museveni, was reportedly abducted from Kenya and is now facing charges in a Ugandan military court. His detention has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and regional observers who question Uganda’s use of military courts to prosecute civilians.
Byanyima labeled the charges against her husband as politically motivated, aimed at silencing opposition voices. “The accusations are vague, and this is clearly an attempt to persecute him for his political stance,” she remarked.
Dr. Besigye’s case has reignited concerns about the safety of opposition figures in East Africa. Kenya, where the abduction occurred, has faced criticism for its perceived complicity or failure to safeguard opposition leaders seeking refuge within its borders.
The Ugandan government has come under fire for its increasing reliance on military courts to stifle dissent. Critics argue that such courts are used to bypass due process and intimidate political opponents.
Byanyima has called for greater regional and international attention to her husband’s plight and the broader issue of political persecution in Uganda. “This is not just about my husband. It’s about the safety of all opposition leaders and the future of democracy in the region,” she said.
Dr. Besigye’s detention has fueled calls for reforms in the region to protect political freedoms and ensure that opposition voices are not criminalized. Observers say the international community’s response to this case will be a litmus test for its commitment to upholding democratic principles in Africa.
