Police in the Elgon region have launched investigations into the brutal killing of a village chairperson in Mbale District, amid growing allegations that the attack may be linked to escalating political tensions as competition heats up ahead of elections in Bungokho North constituency.

Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Moses Nabende, 47, the Local Council One (LC I) chairperson of Bubirabi Lower village in Bubentsye Parish, Wanale Sub-county. Nabende was hacked to death on the night of December 25, 2025, in a violent attack that also left three other people seriously injured.

According to a statement issued by Elgon Region Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika, the incident occurred at around 11:00 p.m. while Nabende was at his commercial bar in the company of family members, including his wife and brothers.

Police said the attackers, who are yet to be identified, initially hurled bottles into the bar, triggering panic among patrons. Nabende reportedly stepped outside to find out what was happening when the assailants pounced on him and others.

“The deceased and others were attacked and beaten. He attempted to flee towards his father’s home, where he collapsed unconscious,” the police statement said.

Nabende was rushed for medical attention but succumbed to his injuries, while three other victims were admitted in critical condition at a nearby health facility.

Security agencies say investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack, with a possible political angle being explored given the heightened political activity in Bungokho North ahead of the forthcoming elections.

Police have condemned the attack and appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to bring all those responsible to justice.
