Parliament of Uganda has officially scheduled May 25, 2026, for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament, setting the stage for what is expected to be a highly watched political contest among leading contenders.
The announcement was made by Peter Odeke during the ongoing swearing-in exercise for newly elected Members of Parliament at Parliament House in Kampala.
According to Odeke, the election of the two top parliamentary leaders will formally usher in official business for the 12th Parliament once the swearing-in process concludes.
The swearing-in ceremony, which began on Wednesday, May 13, is expected to end on Friday, May 15, with MPs-elect taking the Oath of Allegiance and Parliamentary Oath as required under the Constitution.
The upcoming Speaker and Deputy Speaker elections are already attracting significant political attention, particularly within the ruling National Resistance Movement and opposition parties, as candidates intensify consultations and lobbying efforts ahead of the vote.
The Speaker is the head of Parliament and presides over House proceedings, while the Deputy Speaker assists in managing legislative business and chairs sittings in the Speaker’s absence.
Political analysts expect the election to shape the tone and direction of parliamentary debates, committee leadership, and legislative priorities during the next five years.
The 12th Parliament comes into office at a time when Uganda is expected to debate major national issues including economic reforms, governance, oil production, infrastructure development, and oversight of government programs.
