The UK government is considering a ban on social media use for children under 16, according to Technology Secretary Peter Kyle. Speaking on BBC Radio 4\u2019s programme, Kyle said the measure is \u201con the table\u201d as part of efforts to create a safer online environment, particularly for young people. He pledged to \u201cdo what it takes\u201d to address the potential harms associated with social media and smartphones.<\/p>\n

The announcement coincides with ongoing research into the effects of technology on youth, with Kyle noting the lack of \u201cfirm, peer-reviewed evidence\u201d to guide policy decisions. He has also issued a \u201cletter of strategic intent\u201d to Ofcom, which is taking on new powers under the Online Safety Act (OSA).<\/p>\n

The Molly Rose Foundation, a campaign group tackling online harms, welcomed the move but stressed the need for a stronger OSA. The group urged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to enhance the law, ensuring that tech firms prioritize user safety. Public support for tighter regulations has grown, with many parents expressing concerns over the risks of cyberbullying, harmful content, and addiction among young users.<\/p>\n
