Uganda today joined the global community in marking International Anti-Corruption Day 2024 under the theme: \u201cPromoting Effective Participation of the Youth in the War Against Corruption.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The national commemoration, hosted by the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) in collaboration with other anti-corruption agencies, took place at the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja, represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, Nabbanja reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to rooting out corruption, emphasizing the critical need for youth involvement in this fight.<\/p>\n

\u201cCorruption is a vice that undermines development, erodes trust in public institutions, and hinders progress,\u201d she said. \u201cThe participation of young people is essential in building a future free from corruption. They must be empowered to speak out against its evils and lead the way in fostering accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n

The theme of this year\u2019s commemoration highlighted the significant role of young people in combating corruption. It underscored the necessity of creating platforms for youth engagement, where they can actively participate in discussions, raise awareness, and take a stand against the vice.<\/p>\n

The Inspector General of Government, Beti Kamya, echoed similar sentiments, urging the youth to harness their energy, creativity, and innovative spirit to fight corruption. \u201cThe youth are the backbone of our society. If they take a stand against corruption today, we can ensure a brighter, more transparent Uganda tomorrow,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The event included panel discussions, exhibitions by anti-corruption agencies, and a youth-led session focusing on innovative approaches to combating corruption. Participants emphasized the importance of education and awareness campaigns to instill anti-corruption values in the younger generation.<\/p>\n

International Anti-Corruption Day serves as a global reminder of the detrimental impact of corruption on societies and the critical importance of unified efforts to eradicate it. Uganda\u2019s commitment to this cause aligns with the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 16, which focuses on promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions.<\/p>\n

As part of the day’s activities, the IGG launched a youth-centered anti-corruption initiative aimed at encouraging active participation through digital platforms and grassroots campaigns. The initiative seeks to empower young Ugandans to become advocates for transparency and accountability in their communities.<\/p>\n

In her closing remarks, Prime Minister Nabbanja urged all Ugandans to play their part in the fight against corruption. She reiterated the government\u2019s zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and called for collective action to eliminate it.<\/p>\n

\u201cCorruption affects every one of us. It robs our communities of essential services and opportunities. Together, we can build a future where integrity, honesty, and accountability prevail,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The day concluded with renewed calls for collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and the private sector to tackle corruption and build a more transparent Uganda.
