The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has proudly announced the completion of sea trials for two new ferries, MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2, set to revolutionize water transport on Lake Kyoga. These ferries, built in collaboration with M\/S Songoro Marine Transport Limited (SMT), are a major step forward in improving Uganda’s water transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the development, UNRA spokesperson Allan Ssempebwa highlighted the transformative impact these ferries are expected to have.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe introduction of these new ferries marks a significant milestone in our efforts to improve the country\u2019s water transportation infrastructure,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are confident that they will positively impact the lives of communities surrounding Lake Kyoga.\u201d<\/p>\n

MV BKK 1 will operate between Bukungu and Kagwara, while MV BKK 2 will connect Bukungu to Akampala, ensuring critical links to Kaberamaido. These new routes will create seamless transportation across more than eight districts in Eastern Uganda, bridging regions such as Busoga, Teso, Kaberamaido, and the Lango sub-region.<\/p>\n

UNRA officials emphasize that these ferries are part of the government\u2019s broader strategy to enhance water transport infrastructure, providing safer and more reliable options for communities in the area.<\/p>\n

Although the official commissioning date has yet to be announced, the ferries are expected to begin operations soon. Their introduction is poised to significantly improve mobility, boost trade, and contribute to socio-economic development for the communities surrounding Lake Kyoga.<\/p>\n

Once operational, MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2 will not only connect regions but also underscore the government\u2019s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development, ensuring better access and opportunities for thousands of Ugandans.<\/p>\n
