Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, fondly known as \u201cMr. Update,\u201d a relentless advocate for the people of Kawempe North, has passed away at the age of 37.<\/p>\n
His death, confirmed by Lubaga Hospital, marks the end of a life marked by unyielding service, political resilience, and an indomitable connection with his constituents.<\/p>\n

\u201cInna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji\u2019un! Such a dark morning,\u201d shared Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), in a heartfelt tribute to Ssegirinya. \u201cOur brother, our friend, our fellow leader has passed on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hon. Ssegirinya\u2019s life was a tale of determination. Born Butale, Kadugala, Masaka District and raised in Kyebando, Kawempe North, his political journey began humbly as a regular caller on political talk shows in 2006, while still a student at Pimba Secondary School. He dubbed himself the \u201cVoice of Kyebando,\u201d a title that resonated with many due to his grassroots activism.<\/p>\n
Nicknamed \u201cMr. Update\u201d for his constant communication with the public, Ssegirinya\u2019s popularity soared when he defied the odds in 2021. Running under the NUP banner, he defeated veteran politician Suleiman Kidandala with 41,197 votes, becoming a beacon of hope for the people of Kawempe North.<\/p>\n
Challenges and Resilience
\nSsegirinya\u2019s political career, however, was marred by challenges. In 2021, he was arrested alongside fellow MP Allan Ssewanyana on charges linked to the Masaka machete killings. The arrests sparked widespread speculation of political persecution, with critics alleging that the charges were orchestrated by influential figures within the ruling NRM party.<\/p>\n

His imprisonment took a severe toll on his health. Detained for nearly 18 months, Ssegirinya developed multiple complications, including lung disease, hypertension, and skin cancer. \u201cWe were called this morning by his mother that he passed on. He has been in ICU for days. It is very unfortunate,\u201d said NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya. \u201cHe was a fighter, a voice of truth, and a champion for the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
A Health Battle Abroad
\nAfter his release in 2023, efforts to restore his health led him to Germany, the Netherlands, and Kenya for advanced treatment. Despite significant interventions, his condition remained critical. In June 2024, Ssegirinya returned home but continued to struggle with deteriorating health until his passing.<\/p>\n

Legacy of Service
\nSsegirinya\u2019s legacy is rooted in his unshakable commitment to his constituents. From his grassroots activism to his tenure as MP, he remained a true \u201cpeople\u2019s leader,\u201d always prioritizing the voices of the marginalized. His dedication earned him unwavering loyalty from his supporters, who admired his resilience in the face of adversity.<\/p>\n
