The guns largely fell silent, national institutions were rebuilt, roads and schools expanded, and the economy slowly stabilised. But nearly four decades later, with Museveni now seeking a seventh term at the age of 81, an uncomfortable question arises: does peace still require one man to remain in power indefinitely?<br \/>\nFor a growing number of Ugandans\u2014particularly the youth\u2014the answer is increasingly no.<br \/>\nAs the January 15 elections draw near, the meaning of \u201cpeace\u201d being promoted feels less like freedom and more like control. Amnesty International, in a report released on January 4, described the current campaign period as a \u201cbrutal campaign of repression,\u201d citing the use of tear gas, beatings, arbitrary arrests and allegations of torture against opposition supporters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7854\" src=\"https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/511005780.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/511005780.jpg 594w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/511005780-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/511005780-330x220.jpg 330w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/511005780-420x280.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>United Nations human rights experts have also warned of a \u201cpervasive climate of fear,\u201d pointing to enforced disappearances, excessive force and severe restrictions on the media and civil society. The atmosphere bears troubling similarities to the violence that followed the 2021 elections.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7858\" src=\"https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/hq720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"686\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/hq720.jpg 686w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/hq720-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 686px) 100vw, 686px\" \/><br \/>\nOpposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, now campaigns wearing a bulletproof helmet and flak jacket. His rallies are frequently dispersed with tear gas, and he has spoken of supporters being arrested, injured or killed. In contrast, President Museveni\u2019s campaign events proceed smoothly and without disruption.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7862\" src=\"https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bobi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bobi.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bobi-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bobi-1024x933.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bobi-768x700.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bobi-1536x1399.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bobi-860x783.jpg 860w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><br \/>\nIn his New Year\u2019s Eve address on December 31, 2025, Museveni instructed security forces to deploy more tear gas against what he termed the \u201ccriminal opposition,\u201d describing the tactic as legal and non-lethal. The message is clear: don\u2019t gamble with peace.<br \/>\nYet this argument increasingly resembles fearmongering. It diverts attention from Uganda\u2019s pressing challenges: rampant youth unemployment, entrenched corruption, rising public debt, deteriorating public services and deepening inequality.<img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7853\" src=\"https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/feb-2016-uganda-faq-feat-img.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/feb-2016-uganda-faq-feat-img.jpg 770w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/feb-2016-uganda-faq-feat-img-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mgdmediaug.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/feb-2016-uganda-faq-feat-img-768x399.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Uganda is one of the youngest countries in the world, with a median age of about 17. Most citizens did not experience the pre-1986 violence firsthand. For them, peace is not simply the absence of war, but the presence of opportunity, accountability and freedom.<br \/>\nWhy must peace be permanently tied to one individual? Neighbouring countries such as Kenya have changed presidents multiple times without collapsing. That prolonged grip on authority has steadily narrowed democratic space, turning the claim \u201conly I can keep the peace\u201d into a convenient justification for indefinite rule.<br \/>\nFor NRM loyalists, four decades without a nationwide civil war proves the model works. What the country needs is not enforced calm, but genuine peace\u2014peace rooted in justice, freedom and fairness, not in intimidation and fear.<br \/>\nUganda does not need a permanent saviour.
