Municipal and city division chairpersons from across the country have announced plans to seek an audience with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to congratulate him on his victory in the 2026 general elections and reaffirm their commitment to implementing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) manifesto.<\/p>\n
Addressing journalists at a joint press briefing in Kampala, the leaders said the proposed meeting will also be used to formally align themselves with the NRM\u2019s 2026\u20132031 economic programme and to discuss practical ways of strengthening service delivery at the grassroots.<\/p>\n
The chairpersons, drawn from municipalities and city divisions including Lira, Mbarara, Nebbi, Mukono, Mityana, Fort Portal City and Koboko, said they played a key role in mobilising voters during the election period, with many of their areas recording landslide victories for President Museveni.<\/p>\n
According to the leaders, several municipalities and city divisions returned more than 80 percent of the vote in favour of the President, which they described as clear evidence of strong grassroots support for the NRM.<\/p>\n
Mukono Municipality chairperson John Bosco Wamala, who is leading the delegation, said the engagement is intended to appreciate President Museveni for what he described as a competitive and demanding electoral process.
\n\u201cThis was a hard-fought election, and achieving over 71 percent was the result of collective effort, especially from leaders at the local level,\u201d Wamala said. \u201cWe mobilised our communities, and the outcome reflects that work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wamala added that the leaders want to personally assure the President of their readiness to fully implement the NRM manifesto in their respective municipalities and divisions, with a particular focus on oversight and monitoring of government programmes.
\nMbarara City leader Kanyikyirize Aaron said the NRM\u2019s 2026\u20132031 manifesto directly addresses the challenges facing urban areas, especially unemployment, industrial development and youth empowerment.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur responsibility now is to supervise implementation and ensure accountability,\u201d Kanyikyirize said. \u201cWe want to see government interventions reaching the intended beneficiaries and public resources being put to proper use.\u201d<\/p>\n
He noted that municipal leaders are also laying groundwork for the period beyond 2031 by strengthening party and governance structures early.
\nKamuli Municipality chairperson Mugabi Eric emphasized the importance of close collaboration between local governments and the central administration.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe manifesto provides clear guidance on wealth creation, infrastructure development and social services,\u201d Mugabi said. \u201cAs local leaders, we shall engage our communities, monitor programmes and ensure development is inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n
The chairpersons said their planned meeting with President Museveni will focus on enhancing coordination between local governments and the central government to effectively implement the economic and social reforms outlined in the NRM manifesto.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
