The Cabinet of Uganda has confirmed that elections for LC1, LC2 and Women\u2019s Councils will be conducted between March and April this year, ahead of President Yoweri Museveni\u2019s swearing-in scheduled for May.<\/p>\n
The decision follows a presentation made to Cabinet on February 23 by Raphael Magyezi, Minister for Local Government, alongside officials from the Electoral Commission of Uganda. The team outlined a roadmap detailing how the polls would be organized and concluded before the presidential inauguration.<\/p>\n
Addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre, Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi said the move is intended to harmonise the electoral cycle so that all elections are conducted within the same timeframe.<\/p>\n
According to Dr. Baryomunsi, aligning the elections will streamline the country\u2019s electoral calendar, reduce administrative costs, and improve coordination among relevant institutions. He noted that holding local council and women\u2019s council elections ahead of the swearing-in ensures a fully constituted leadership structure at all levels of government.<\/p>\n
LC1 and LC2 leaders play a critical role in grassroots governance, community dispute resolution, and mobilization, while Women\u2019s Councils serve as platforms for advancing gender representation and community development initiatives.<\/p>\n
Government officials say preparations are already underway, with the Electoral Commission expected to issue detailed guidelines on nominations, campaign timelines, and polling procedures in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
