The State has named Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, a mobilisation figure in the National Unity Platform (NUP), as a key witness in a case where 21 party leaders and supporters are accused of unlawful military drilling.<\/p>\n
The development emerged during proceedings at the Kawempe Chief Magistrate\u2019s Court in Kanyanya, where the accused including Edmund Mutwe and Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro had applied for bail.<\/p>\n
Defense lawyer Kato Tumusiime said the court denied the application, citing public interest and concerns over the suitability of the sureties presented.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe bail was denied on grounds of public interest, and the court also took issue with the age of the sureties and the absence of close blood relationships,\u201d Tumusiime told court.<\/p>\n
Nyanzi, popularly known as Chairman Nyanzi, is the brother of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.<\/p>\n
The defense confirmed that the State has since made full disclosure of evidence, allowing lawyers to begin preparing for trial.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe State has since made full disclosure, and we are now in position to study the materials, brief our clients, and prepare for the hearing,\u201d Tumusiime added.<\/p>\n
The case has been adjourned to May 15, 2026, for hearing.<\/p>\n
In a related matter involving Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who faces charges of incitement to commit a crime, proceedings had earlier been delayed due to the absence of the trial magistrate. The court had directed the State to ensure full disclosure before the next hearing.<\/p>\n
