Rwanda Weighs Social Media Ban for Under-16s

Rwanda is considering new legislation that could restrict children under the age of 16 from accessing social media platforms, in a move aimed at strengthening online child protection.

Government officials say the proposal is intended to shield minors from harmful content, cyberbullying, and online exploitation, especially as internet usage continues to expand across the country.

Authorities noted that discussions are still ongoing, with key aspects such as enforcement mechanisms and the role of tech companies yet to be finalized.

If adopted, the measure would place Rwanda among a growing number of countries seeking tighter controls on children’s digital access, reflecting global concerns about online safety and mental well-being
