The Ugandan government has announced plans to begin the voluntary evacuation of its citizens from South Africa following a wave of anti-migrant violence and xenophobic attacks in parts of the country that have left one Ugandan dead.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo said President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had directed the relevant government agencies to immediately put in place arrangements to assist Ugandans wishing to return home.
Kasolo said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Uganda High Commission in South Africa, and leaders of the Ugandan community in South Africa to coordinate the exercise.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working in close coordination with the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Uganda High Commission in South Africa and the leadership of the Ugandan community in South Africa, is finalising an evacuation plan that is expected to commence in the next few days,” Kasolo said.
The evacuation exercise is intended for Ugandan nationals who voluntarily wish to return home in light of the deteriorating security situation.
Government also confirmed that one Ugandan national lost their life during the recent unrest, although authorities had not immediately released the identity of the deceased or further details surrounding the circumstances of the death.
The announcement comes amid growing concern over renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in several parts of South Africa, with migrants from different African countries reportedly facing violence, intimidation, and destruction of property.
Ugandan authorities have urged citizens still living in South Africa to remain vigilant, avoid areas experiencing unrest, and maintain close contact with the Uganda High Commission for guidance and assistance.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said additional information regarding registration procedures, transport arrangements, and evacuation schedules will be communicated once preparations are complete.
Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ugandan citizens abroad and ensuring the safe and orderly return of those who choose to leave South Africa.
