The Government of Uganda has launched an emergency food relief intervention to support communities in the Karamoja sub-region affected by a prolonged dry spell that has disrupted agricultural production and heightened food insecurity.
The relief package comprises 9,419,610 kilogrammes of maize flour and dry beans, which will be distributed to 313,987 households across 480 parishes in the nine districts of Karamoja.
Government said the intervention is intended to provide immediate food assistance to vulnerable households whose livelihoods have been affected by the drought, while helping to reduce the risk of hunger and malnutrition in the region.
Officials noted that the food distribution forms part of the government’s broader humanitarian response aimed at cushioning affected communities as efforts continue to strengthen long-term food security and climate resilience.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the people of Karamoja and called on local leaders and implementing agencies to ensure that the relief reaches the intended beneficiaries in a transparent and timely manner.
