President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni yesterday met ambassadors representing members of the United Nations Security Council at State House Entebbe, where he formally presented Ambassador Olara Otunnu as Uganda’s candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.
The meeting formed part of Uganda’s diplomatic campaign to rally international support for Otunnu’s candidature as the United Nations prepares to elect a successor to Secretary-General António Guterres, whose term expires at the end of the year.
President Museveni highlighted Ambassador Otunnu’s extensive experience in international diplomacy, peacebuilding and public service, describing him as well-qualified to lead the global body during a period marked by growing geopolitical and humanitarian challenges.
Ambassador Otunnu previously served as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and later as the UN Under-Secretary-General and the first Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict.
Uganda has been actively engaging UN member states in support of Otunnu’s bid, expressing confidence that his leadership experience and commitment to multilateral cooperation make him a strong candidate for the organization’s top office.
The election of the next UN Secretary-General will require the recommendation of the United Nations Security Council before the successful candidate is appointed by the United Nations General Assembly.
