Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among has downplayed the political strength of Democratic Party (DP) President Norbert Mao, saying he does not pose a significant national threat within the current political landscape.
Among pointed to the numerical reality in Parliament, noting that Mao leads a party with only six Members of Parliament in the 12th Parliament. She argued that such limited representation considerably weakens his national influence and bargaining power in a political environment largely shaped by numbers.
According to the Speaker, even with strong personal ambition and political experience, Mao would face an uphill task competing against candidates backed by a dominant party that commands more than 400 MPs — an overwhelming majority that significantly influences legislative direction and national political momentum.
Her remarks highlight the continued dominance of the ruling party in Uganda’s parliamentary politics, where numerical strength often translates into structural advantage, resource mobilization capacity, and broader grassroots reach.
While Mao remains a seasoned politician with decades of experience and a recognizable national profile, Among’s comments underscore the reality that party strength in Parliament remains a critical factor in determining political leverage and competitiveness at the national level.
