A coalition of Ugandan civil society organisations has strongly opposed the government’s continued restrictions on non-governmental organisations, warning that the clampdown is undermining essential services and weakening democratic participation.
In a joint statement, the groups are calling for the immediate lifting of all suspensions imposed on NGOs, as well as the unfreezing of their bank accounts, arguing that the current measures have severely disrupted their ability to operate effectively.
The organisations say the restrictions have not only halted key programs but also affected vulnerable communities that depend on NGO-led services such as health support, education, and humanitarian assistance.
They further caution that limiting the work of civil society risks shrinking civic space, reducing public engagement, and silencing citizen voices that are vital for accountability and governance.
The groups emphasize that a strong and independent civil society plays a crucial role in national development, acting as a bridge between citizens and the state while supporting transparency and inclusive growth.
They warn that if the situation persists, Uganda could face setbacks in social development and democratic progress built over the years.
