The election of Justice Minister Norbert Mao as Member of Parliament for Laroo-Pece has been challenged at the Gulu High Court, setting the stage for a high-profile legal battle.

The petition, filed by Kitara Tonny, alleges voter bribery and electoral malpractice, including claims that Shs150,000 was given to a SACCO to influence voters. It also accuses Mao of making illegal radio appearances between 11:00 pm and 1:00 am on the eve of polling day.

The Electoral Commission has been listed as a respondent in the case.

The petition introduces fresh uncertainty around Mao’s victory and could significantly alter the political dynamics in Laroo-Pece if the court rules in favour of the petitioner.

Beyond the constituency, the case carries wider political implications, as Mao is also positioning himself in the race for Speaker of Parliament. Analysts say the outcome could influence both his political trajectory and broader alignments within Uganda’s political landscape.
