Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, the Member of Parliament for West Budama Central, has been elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament after securing a decisive victory in a highly contested race.

The election was presided over by Flavian Zeija, who officially declared Oboth-Oboth Speaker-Elect following the vote held during the first sitting of the new Parliament.

Oboth-Oboth won overwhelmingly with 441 votes, defeating his closest challenger Paul Mwiru, who garnered 60 votes.

Norbert Mao, the MP for Laroo-Pece Division, finished third with 15 votes.

The victory marks a major political milestone for Oboth-Oboth, who now assumes leadership of the legislative arm of government as Uganda’s 12th Parliament formally begins its term.

His election follows weeks of intense political maneuvering within the ruling National Resistance Movement, which had endorsed him as its official candidate ahead of the vote.

As Speaker, Oboth-Oboth will preside over parliamentary proceedings, oversee legislative business, and play a central role in shaping debates and decision-making within the House over the next five years.

The election ushers in a new leadership era in Parliament following the conclusion of the 11th Parliament and the exit of former Speaker Anita Annet Among from the race.
