The Secretary-General of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), H.E. Moussa Saleh Batraki, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Jacob Markson Oboth, to discuss Uganda’s role in advancing parliamentary diplomacy and regional cooperation.
Batraki was accompanied by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, who also serves as President of the OACPS Parliamentary Assembly and Co-President of the OACPS–EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly.
The meeting focused on Uganda’s proposal to host the OACPS–EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly later this year. The assembly brings together legislators from Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific and the European Union to strengthen cooperation, dialogue and partnerships on issues of mutual interest.
Speaker Oboth reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to international engagement, expressing confidence in Uganda’s growing influence on the global parliamentary stage and its readiness to host the high-level gathering.
Batraki commended Uganda for ratifying the Samoa Agreement, describing the move as a demonstration of the country’s commitment to strengthening cooperation within the OACPS framework. He also praised Uganda’s leadership in the organisation and welcomed the reforms aimed at enhancing the OACPS and deepening its engagement with the European Parliament.
If approved, Uganda’s hosting of the OACPS–EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly is expected to further boost the country’s profile in international diplomacy while reinforcing partnerships between member states.
