The Ministry of Education and Sports has warned against teaching and coaching of learners on holidays as term one of 2024 comes to a close.
Term one began on February 5, 2024, and will end on Friday, May 2, 2024, meaning that learners have only one week to break off holidays.
Many educational institutions have embraced the practice of retaining learners at school, ensuring that learners continue to engage with their studies even during the holiday season.
The Minister of State for Primary Education, Joyce Moriku Kadacu, has issued a warning to schools that this will not be tolerated.
“The Ministry of Education and Sports will not tolerate holiday teaching and coaching for children in any school. Please abide by the regulations and standards set by the Ministry. Our laws, regulations, and guidelines do not have provisions for holiday teachings. So be careful,” she said.
Kaducu, who on Wednesday was speaking to reporters in Kampala, asked parents to pay special attention to the girl child to prevent teenage pregnancies during holidays.
“Parents, pay special attention to the girl child to avoid teenage pregnancy and early marriage since most of this vice often takes place at home under your watch. Ensure the boy child is equally counseled on matters concerning reproductive health and rights, and embrace abstinence. As our children come home, let’s uphold Christian values, cultural norms, morals, and social etiquette for them. Ensure your parents are the gatekeepers for the phones and social media for our children so that they handle social media with maximum discipline.”
During term one, teaching and learning went on smoothly without so many interruptions.
