The government has announced plans to introduce a uniform colour for all school transport vehicles as part of new measures aimed at improving road safety following a series of fatal crashes involving school buses that have claimed the lives of several learners and left many others injured.
Officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport said the proposed measure is intended to make vehicles transporting learners more visible on the roads, enabling other motorists to easily identify them and exercise greater caution.
In addition to the uniform colour, the ministry plans to introduce special identification badges for school transport drivers. Under the proposed regulations, drivers will be required to undergo a vetting and approval process before being authorized to operate vehicles carrying schoolchildren.
Government says the reforms are part of broader efforts to strengthen the safety of learners during travel to and from school, improve accountability among school transport operators, and reduce the growing number of road crashes involving school vehicles.
The planned changes follow recent fatal accidents involving school buses that have renewed concerns over the safety standards governing school transport in Uganda. Authorities say further details on the implementation of the new measures will be announced in due course.
