It was an ordinary day in 1994 when a young Van Vicker, nursing a basketball injury, boarded a bus in Ghana. Little did he know, this seemingly mundane moment would change the course of his life forever, leading him to the love of his life, Adjoa.
Their story, which began with a missed opportunity and grew into a lifelong romance, is a reminder that love often blossoms when least expected.
Van Vicker and his wife Adjoa’s love story isn’t just about fate—

On this International Boyfriend Day, their journey from a fateful encounter on a bus to a flourishing marriage highlights the timeless beauty of love built on trust and connection. Theirs is a love story that started with reluctance but evolved into something that has withstood the test of time.
After finishing a basketball game, Van boarded the bus with an injury, only to find his favorite back-row seat taken by Adjoa, a stranger at the time. Frustrated and in pain, Van sat elsewhere, unwillingly closer to her as the bus filled up. When Adjoa offered him some food during the ride, Van declined something he regretted for the rest of the journey. That small moment could have been a chance to connect, but Van let it slip by.
As they reached their destination, an old man on the bus joked, “Schoolgirl, help schoolboy,” giving Van an opportunity to strike up a conversation. With no cell phones at the time, Van needed Adjoa’s address to stay in touch, but neither had a pen or paper. Miraculously, the taxi driver offered a pen, and the bus driver found paper, allowing Van to scribble down her address.
Back home, Van didn’t immediately contact her. But later, as he prepared to return to school, he remembered her and decided to write a heartfelt letter, thanking her for her kindness. That letter sparked a correspondence that would last for months.
A Love Written in Letters: What began as a simple thank-you note soon blossomed into an exchange of long, intimate letters, each filled with stories, thoughts, and songs. Van would begin each letter by addressing Adjoa with a song title—Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder—adding a personal touch that deepened their connection. Through these letters, their bond grew stronger, building a foundation for the relationship that would follow.
Adjoa’s Reflection: “He would write pages, sometimes more than four,” Adjoa recalls. “We talked about everything. Each letter felt like a new chapter, and with every one, we got to know each other more deeply.” Their love story wasn’t built on grand gestures but on thoughtful communication and the joy of discovery.
A Lifelong Journey: What began as a random bus ride turned into a lifelong journey of love, marriage, and family. Van and Adjoa’s story is one of mutual respect, heartfelt communication, and a shared sense of destiny. “Love isn’t about how long you’ve been together,” Van reflects. “It’s about how much you love each other every single day.”
