The Uganda Cranes are on the cusp of securing a spot at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a hard-fought 2-1 victory against South Sudan in Juba.

The win, which came courtesy of an own goal by Alfred Leku in the second half, propels Uganda to the top of Group K with 10 points, putting them in prime position to qualify for the continental showpiece.

The match began with a bang as Denis Omedi opened the scoring for Uganda in the 15th minute, finishing off a brilliant build-up play orchestrated by Allan Okello. However, South Sudan quickly responded, with Yohanna Juma leveling the score just six minutes later with a stunning 25-yard strike that left Cranes’ goalkeeper Isma Watenga with no chance. The teams went into the break tied at 1-1.

Uganda’s head coach Paul Put made key tactical changes, bringing on Timothy Awany for the injured Halid Lwaliwa and introducing fresh legs with Travis Mutyaba, Jude Ssemugabi, and Steven Mukwala in the second half.

These substitutions paid dividends, particularly in the 66th minute when Ssemugabi was fouled just outside the box, leading to a free kick by Mutyaba. The resulting play saw Leku inadvertently head the ball into his own net, giving Uganda a vital lead.

Despite several missed chances, with Omedi and Mukwala both coming close to extending the lead, Uganda held on for the victory. The Cranes dominated the match, controlling possession and creating numerous opportunities, but were kept at bay by South Sudan’s resilient goalkeeper.

With 10 points from their group games, Uganda’s AFCON qualification now depends on the outcome of the South Africa versus Congo match later tonight. If South Africa secures a win, Uganda will officially qualify for the tournament, marking a significant achievement for the national team.

The Cranes’ strong performance in Juba demonstrated their resilience and tactical flexibility, setting them up for what could be another historic AFCON appearance.
