The Namirembe Diocese and the Anglican community in Uganda are mourning the passing of Bishop Emeritus Samuel Balagadde Ssekadde, who died at Kisubi Hospital at the age of 80.

The revered bishop, known for his humility and commitment to the Church, passed away on Monday evening, leaving a legacy of spiritual leadership and social transformation.

Bishop Ssekadde, who served as the bishop of Namirembe for many years, was celebrated for his dedication to both spiritual and social development. His sudden passing has drawn an outpouring of tributes from both clergy and faithful, who recall his influential role in expanding the ministry, supporting vulnerable communities, and guiding Christians in their faith.

Family members, including his adopted daughter Ruth Ninsiima, revealed that the bishop had been in good health leading up to the weekend, attending a public event in Kazo. However, his condition worsened in the evening, and despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mourners have gathered at his home in Bugonga, near Lake Victoria, to pay their respects, sharing hymns and stories of the late bishop’s influence. Clergy members, led by Rev. William Mpalanyi, described him as a humble and visionary leader, committed to upholding the Church’s traditions while promoting unity and spiritual growth.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, paid tribute to Bishop Ssekadde, calling him a “visionary leader” who made significant contributions to the Church.

Funeral arrangements have been set, with services scheduled at St. Mark’s Church in Entebbe and St. Paul’s Cathedral in Namirembe, where the bishop will be laid to rest on Thursday.

Bishop Ssekadde’s legacy as a leader who combined spirituality with social responsibility remains a lasting testament to his life’s work in serving the Church of Uganda.
