In 2016, Atim mentally and emotionally detached from her marriage, setting in motion a carefully concealed plan to exit. By 2018, she made her move, leaving behind everything except her five children and a deep determination to start anew. The escape was calculated; Atim left with nothing but what she wore, secretly informing only her brother to avoid interference. This strategic departure ensured her safety while she mapped out her path to a brighter future.
Starting from scratch, Atim relied on the kindness of friends and her own grit. “I did all types of odd jobs with my baby on my back,” she recalls, navigating new challenges as she waited for legal work authorization. Eventually, she worked two full-time jobs to provide for her family, often leaving her 14-year-old son to care for his siblings in her absence.
