What started as a night of jubilation for Arsenal fans in Lukaya Town, Kalungu District, turned tragic when a security guard fatally shot one man and injured another during a heated altercation following Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Manchester United in the English Premier League.

The incident occurred at the Uganda Cares building on Wednesday night, where a group of fans gathered to celebrate the Gunners’ victory. According to witnesses, their lively chanting drew complaints from the building’s manager, only identified as Banda, who instructed the on-duty security guard to restore order.

Despite warnings, the celebrations continued. In an effort to disperse the crowd, the building’s electricity was switched off, escalating tensions. Amid the ensuing chaos, the guard discharged his firearm, killing 30-year-old John Ssenyonga on the spot and injuring another fan identified as Lawrence.

Greater Masaka Police Spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the incident, stating that the guard fled the scene and is currently being sought by authorities.

“A case has been opened, and investigations are ongoing,” Kasirye said, urging football fans to celebrate peacefully.

A History of Heated Rivalry

This is the second year in a row that matches between Arsenal and Manchester United have sparked extreme reactions among fans in Uganda. Last year, an Arsenal victory led to reports of a suicide, a fatal stabbing, and the arrest of seven fans in Jinja City during a mock trophy parade.

Outrage and Calls for Reform

The shooting has sparked outrage in the Lukaya community, with residents questioning the judgment of the security personnel involved.

“This was unnecessary,” said a visibly shaken resident. “Better measures need to be in place to handle these emotionally charged gatherings.”

The incident has reignited calls for stricter regulation of private security companies and their personnel, especially in handling volatile public situations.

As investigations continue, police have called for calm and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace during celebrations. Meanwhile, the injured fan is receiving treatment, and Ssenyonga’s family is demanding justice for their tragic loss.
