The Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, brought a mix of energy and humor to the opening ceremony of the Inter-Parliamentary Games as she participated in a 100-meter curtain-raiser race alongside regional leaders.

Held in Nairobi, Kenya, the event featured notable participants, including Kenya’s President, H.E. Dr. William Ruto, Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly, Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.

In a lighthearted gesture, Speaker Among playfully allowed the hosts to clinch the victory, saying, “I deliberately let the President and Governor win to ensure our hosts feel appreciated and to maintain the exciting atmosphere around the games!”

The race set the tone for the week-long sporting event, which brings together parliamentarians from across the East African region. It is aimed at fostering regional unity, promoting wellness, and providing a platform for networking among legislators.

President Ruto, known for his enthusiasm for sports, took the win with a sprint that drew cheers from the crowd. Governor Nassir followed closely, adding to the excitement of the moment. Speaker Among’s participation was met with applause as she demonstrated camaraderie and goodwill.

Kenya’s Speaker, Hon. Wetang’ula, commended the vibrant display of teamwork and emphasized the importance of the games in strengthening ties across borders.

The Inter-Parliamentary Games include various sports such as football, netball, volleyball, and athletics, with legislators from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan participating. Uganda’s delegation, led by Speaker Among, is set to compete in all disciplines.

The curtain-raiser race has already generated buzz on social media, with many praising Speaker Among for her grace and humor in participating. The games continue throughout the week, highlighting the role of sports in diplomacy and collaboration.
