The news of the passing of Dr Frank Nabwiso, a veteran Forum for Democratic Party politician and former member of parliament for Kagoma County in Jinja District, has sent the opposition fraternity into shockwaves and grief. From humble beginnings as a Grade 3 teacher to earning a PhD in Adult Education and Rural Development, Nabwiso’s journey was one of relentless pursuit of excellence. His influence spanned academia, politics, and community development, making him a cherished icon of progress.

Early Life and Academic Achievements

Born in 1940 at Bugembe Maternity Centre to Ezekiel Kijja Bulima and Eseza Ruth Matama, Dr. Nabwiso displayed an early passion for learning. His dedication culminated in earning his PhD from Wisconsin Madison University in 1976, specializing in Adult Education and Rural Development. This marked the beginning of a career dedicated to empowering others through knowledge.

Upon returning to Uganda, Dr. Nabwiso joined Makerere University as a Resident Tutor, succeeding the esteemed Prof. Apollo Nsibambi. His academic career later took him to Nairobi, where he worked as a Regional Education Officer for the International Planned Parenthood Federation, overseeing educational initiatives across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The first man to anchor news in Lusoga on the national broadcaster now called UTV, Frank Nabwiso was a man who saw it all not only governments but also in his roles in various steps of the country’s history

Political Leadership and National Contribution

Dr. Nabwiso’s transition into politics was fueled by a desire to shape Uganda’s future during a period of upheaval. As Secretary for the External Wing of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in 1984, he was a key figure in organizing the Nairobi peace talks between Gen. Tito Okello Lutwa’s government and the NRA, led by Yoweri Museveni.

In 2001, he was elected Member of Parliament for Kagoma County under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), where he championed multiparty democracy and rural development. Beyond Parliament, he served as Secretary of the Inter-Party Cooperation, fostering alliances among Uganda’s key political parties.

Championing Health and Education

Dr. Nabwiso’s leadership extended to critical social issues, particularly the fight against HIV/AIDS. As the second Director of the AIDS Information Centre, he played a pivotal role in raising awareness and providing support during the epidemic’s peak.

In 2013, he was appointed Acting Vice of Busoga University, where he worked to make higher education accessible in Busoga. His involvement in community projects under Jinja Diocese further demonstrated his commitment to cultural preservation and mentorship.

A Family Man and Legacy of Service

A devoted husband and father of nine, including three adopted children, Dr. Nabwiso instilled values of integrity, education, and service in his family. His leadership was as much about nurturing the next generation as it was about addressing Uganda’s broader challenges.

A Lasting Legacy

Dr. Frank Nabwiso’s life was a beacon of hope for many. His contributions to education, politics, and community service bridged divides and inspired unity. As Uganda mourns his passing, his enduring legacy serves as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have in shaping a nation’s path forward.
